The "Where the hell have you been" post.

I think this might be the longest stretch I have gone without updating my blog since I started it.  I hope that that handful of people that read this haven't give up on me!  Work has been keeping me far busier than normal (I am sitting in a hotel room in Cincinnati as I type this).  Fortunately, after working all of last weekend straight through - I've had a couple of good client meetings this week and that has made it well worth it.  And let me just say that the client I am visiting in Cincinnati, Cintas - is THE GREATEST CLIENT EVER.  Being here is not like work because they really are the best client in the world to work for.  And if you think perhaps my client reads this blog and I am just trying to butter them up - You are wrong!  I really do feel that lucky.  Besides, while I would love to this that that many people are actually interested in what I have to say here, I am not quite THAT delusional.  Although I do have my days....

Finley is teething hardcore. Her favorite teething relief at the moment is the remote control - and this has led to some pretty funny incidents between her and her daddy (who also loves the remote control).  The funny thing about Finley is that as chill of a kid that she is - she DOES NOT like having the things she wants taken away from her and as such, I have witnessed some tense moments between the two of them.  Anyway, the poor girl is getting THREE of her front teeth at once and I am not sure, but I think there might be more coming too.  Currently, at 16 months (in fact today is her 16 month birthday - Happy Birthday Princess!) she still only has the two teeth she got at ages 9 and 10 mos.  Nate got his first tooth at 14 months, and then, his came in at least two at a time from there but he didn't finish getting all of his teeth (like his molars) until he was three.  And so, since Finley never does anything half-ass - teething is no different.  She has been a champ as always - but darn it I just wish those teeth would break through enough to give her some relief.  Currently, she just has these teeny tiny pinpoint dots where the skin has broken.  And so the battle of the remote shall continue.

And now for some Thanksgiving pics of the fam.  How cute are these two.  Nate and his cousin Kassi breaking a little Thanksgiving bread at the kiddie table (note all of the Buzz Light Year toys that joined them for the feast).

Tammy and Jim blessed us with their overwhelming fashion sense and presented us with "the dueling scarves".

Gabi, the cutie pie, who graduated to the adult table this year!

And last but certainly not least - Princess Finley in the adorable dress we got from who else?  Amanda!  I will have you guys know - this was the very first time Finley wore tights.  As a mommy of a little girl, this was a big moment for me, a milestone.  It was so exciting, and I am sure you are all thinking, seriously?  But mind you, we didn't really get out much Finley's first year - the tights?  They were a big deal for us!  Isn't sure adorable?

And while I pledged I would never get another real tree....I present to you...my real Christmas tree!  Here is the deal - after Thanksgiving, I IMMEDIATELY get this urge to get the tree up.  This year, our tree is still in storage, not to mention all of lights on my lovely pre-lit tree - are burnt out.  So if I was going to have to string lights on the damn tree anyway - I went the route that got me to the desired end result (having my tree up) the soonest.  And so far I have to say - my experience this year has been a lot better.  This year we chose a Noble Fir, last year we had a Frasier Fir - I like this one so much better.  Its got a better shape, actually smells like a Christmas tree and the branches are tightly packed and I love that.

And along the lines of Christmas - I am happy to say that my mom and I braved Black Friday shopping this year - at of all places - Woodfielld Mall!  Although my mom thought I was nuts - the best deal of the day was 50% off of EVERYTHING at Gap Kids.  That's right, I waited in line for an hour and 15 minutes.  My mom thought I was nuts!  Would I do it again?  Yep.  I saved $77!!  Go me!

The Roth family is full of the Christmas spirit.  My Christmas shopping is nearly done - I have been making good progress on the since Black Friday.Nate is REALLY in to his Elf on the Shelf, Innie, and the first thing he does every day when he wakes up is go to find him.  And when I ask him how Innie got to his hiding spot of the day - he tells me "He's magic mom!".  I love it.

Remember the DIY Christmas ornament wreath I mentioned in one of my last posts?  Probably not, since it was so long ago....Anyway, here it is....

Here is my baby girl working it out on her exercise ball.  She always gets a kick out of this.

And working in this other crazy contraption her vision therapist brought last week, and left at our house because Finley liked it so much, that gives her nice support in her midsection so she can simulate being on her hands and knees.

Other miscellaneous things...Finley had her first cardiology appointment today since they took her off the Propranolol. I assumed the doctor would do an echo and she didn't.  Slightly disappointing because I was thinking that an echo would give me a little peace of mind as to how everything is going with her heart - so now - I still feel a little uncertain.  Needless to say, I will be contacting her cardiologist when I get home!

And for my not-so -regular Weight Watchers update.  I gave back two pounds after Thanksgiving, which I sort of figured was a given.  The Sunday after Thanksgiving they launched their new Point Plus program and last week, my first week on the new program...I lost 4.6 lbs!  I am up to 13 in total.  But I fear this week might be a little rough too since I have been traveling all week.  Oh well, the scale is my friend!

Finley's Medical History

Born on 8/8/2009 - Finley is taken to Children's Memorial Hospital via the transport team 12 hours after she is born.  She is having trouble breathing and is turning blue.  She is immediately admitted to the NICU.

8/9/2009 - Finley is diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a congenital heart defect and laryngomalacia, a condition that causes her to aspirate whatever she swallows in to her lungs.

8/21/2009 - Finley has open heart surgery to place a Blalock Taussig shunt to help facilitate proper blood flow.  When she is older, she will require a full repair of her heart.

9/10/2009 - Finley is released from the NICU.  Because of her laryngomalacia and reflux, she is fed 100% through a nasal gastric tube.

9/14/2009 - Finley is re-admitted to the hospital for an infection in her surgical wound.  Finley's genetic test comes back - she is diagnosed with CHARGE Syndrome.

9/15/2009 - During a CT scan to assess the infection, the doctors notice something strange on her CT.  It appears Finley has a malrotated bowel and will require surgery.

9/23/2009 - Finley is examined by the opthalmologist and she is found to have colobomas, a condition common with CHARGE Syndrome, in both eyes.  The degree of her visual impairment is unknown.

9/30/2009 - Finley has the Ladd's Procedure to correct the malrotation and also has a g-tube placed.

10/7/2009 - Finley has a sedated ABR to check her hearing.  She has a mild hearing loss in her right ear and a moderate to severe loss in her left.  Her loss can be at least partially corrected with hearing aids.

10/8/2009 - Finley is supposed to be released from the hospital today but she has been having low blood sugars.  The endocrinology is called in to evaluate her.

10/29/2009 - Finley is finally released from the hospital with a unconfirmed diagnosis of hyperinsulinism.  Actual diagnosis requires fasting blood tests - because of her heart condition, it is not safe for her to fast.  She needs to have her blood sugar tested every three hours and we are taught how to administer an emergency glucagon injection in case her blood sugar gets to low.

11/1/2009 - Finley requires emergency injection because she cannot sustain her blood sugar.  She is taken to the local ER and transported via the transport team to Childrens Memorial.

11/10/2009 - Finley is discharged from the hospital on a 24 hour continuous feed.  We add polycose to her milk to help her keep her blood sugar at an acceptable level.

11/22/2009 - Finley is taken to the local emergency room with a bad cold - she is having trouble breathing and her oxygen saturations are low.   She is transported via the transport team up to Children's Memorial.

11/25/2009 - Finley is released from the hospital - just in time for Thanksgiving.

12/8/2009 - Finley is taken to the local emergency room for observation - she has a bad cold.

12/21/2009 - Nate is chasing the dog and the dog runs in to Finley's IV pole, knocks it down and pulls out her g-tube.  She is taken to the ER at Childrens to have it put back in.

2/10/2010 - Finley is admitted through the ER at Childrens - she has a bad cold again.  Oxygen saturations are low and breathing is labored.

2/13/2010 - Finley is released from the hospital.

4/17/2010 - Finley is taken to the ER at Childrens - she has pus draining from her belly button.  They suspect a urachal cyst - they send us home with orders to return on  Tuesday (during our scheduled visit) for an abdominal ultrasound.

4/20/2010 - Finley is admitted to Childrens for an overnight stay.  She will have a swallow study and abdominal ultrasound on Tuesday and a CT and sedated echocardiogram on Wednesday which will require anesthesia.

4/21/2010 - The anesthesiologists have trouble intubating Finley, so they call in her ENT to have a look at her.  He observes that her airway is 75% closed off - partially due to scar tissue from previous intubation and partially due to an infection.  The diagnosis is subglottic stenosis and may require her to have surgery on her airway.  She is immediately admitted to the PICU and put on a 24/7 breathing treatment and antibiotics and steroids to help reduce the inflammation.

4/26/2010 - Finley is well enough to be taken off of all oxygen.  Immunology and Infectious Disease are called in to examine Finley because the culture of her throat are growing staph and strep.  Infectious Disease is trying to figure out what could have caused her infection.  Immunology labs will be drawn to determine if Finley has an immune problem which sometime occurs with children with CHARGE.  This is the second significant infection she has had since she was born.

4/27/2010 - The lab calls to say that they mis-read Finley's airway culture.  It's not growing staph - its only growing strep.

4/28/2010 - Immunology labs are back and don't show anything significant.  Finley's lymphocyte counts are low but that isn't unusual for a child who is fighting an infection.  The doctor wants to re-examine her before her first birthday.  In the meantime she cannot have any live vaccines.

4/29/2010 - Finley is discharged from the hospital.  The ENT will do a bronchoscopy before her heart repair surgery to determine next steps on her airway issue.

5/11/2010 - Finley has open heart surgery to repair her heart.

5/17/2010 - Finley begins to show signs of infection which is later identified as a urinary tract infection.

5/25/2010 - Finley is discharged from the hospital.

5/30/2010 - Finley goes to the ER at Childrens because of fussiness, sweating, heavy breathing.  And echo later identifies that the pressure gradient around Finley's pulmonary valve is an astounding 90%.

6/1/2010 - Finley is admitted to Childrens to try a medication called Propranolol to help ease the pressure in her heart.

6/2/2010 - The Propranolol brings the pressure in Finley's heart down from 90% to 50%.  Finley has a positive test for C. difficile which will require antibiotic treatment.
